25-12-2004 First updates of Beijing after China 2004

Still getting re-aquainted with my own website we log some of the latest information on Liu Lichang Street Online. My discoveries started right away on my arrival back at Liu Lichang Street when I discovered that the connecting pedestrian walkway had just recently been torn down. Not much later, on a walking visit to the nearby Li Yuan Peking Opera show (Jianghuo Hotel), I discovered that reconstruction activities of Beijing were hitting hard in this entire area. In short – Liu Lichang Street will be preserved. But Hutong areas adjacent West of- and along Nan Xinhua Jie have been demolished.

New construction is in it’s very initial stages. A experimental English school has sprung up along Nan Xinhua Jie between Liu Lichang Street and Heping Men. Many Hutong stores, many of which catering business cards have been lost or relocated.

Yes, it is amazing how fast Beijing is changing. Some of it is very
exciting. Some is Sad. Inevitably , much history is lost, many from my
favorite Beijing City parts the Hutong, but also from the soul of the
City. Peace of Mind, slow pace of Life, and perhaps.. the thought of
Twice as many cars , twice as many beggars are words I uttered many
a time. Still I love this City of course. No doubt. Although it is a
struggling adventure.
